Course Type

This course prepares the student for the individual oral component of the IB Language and Literature (SL/HL) course.

Course Overview

This course will focus on preparing students for the IB English A Individual Oral (IO) assessment. Students will develop their skills in analyzing both literary and non-literary texts, learning how to identify key themes, literary techniques, and contextual factors. The course will guide students through the process of selecting and analyzing extracts from their chosen texts, ensuring they can effectively connect their analysis to a global issue.

The course will also provide structured practice in oral presentation skills, helping students to communicate their analysis clearly and confidently. By using real IB assessment criteria, students will learn how to structure their presentations to meet the expectations of the IO.

The student will have the opportunity to incorporate their individual school set texts into their oral presentation. These texts will be analyzed in detail, ensuring a deep understanding of the material.

This course is best suited for students preparing for the IB English A Individual Oral, offering a comprehensive approach to both analysis and presentation skills.

At the end of the course the student:

  • Will be able to extract, evaluate, and analyze the effect of structure, key literary and non-literary devices in a variety of texts. They will also be able to apply contextual and textual conventions across genres, cultures, and time periods to critically interpret various works, ensuring alignment with IB criteria.

  • Will be able to focus, develop, and elaborate their analysis, using relevant quotes, precise language, and discourse markers to structure ideas and present relationships effectively, while meeting the expectations of the IB Individual Oral assessment.

  • Will have a clear understanding of the requirements and rubric for the Individual Oral, as well as the coursework tasks required throughout the course. The student will have developed skills in verbal presentation, analysis, and engagement with texts, equipping them to confidently meet the IB criteria.

Weaker students might want to use the express course as an overview and then follow that up with ad- hoc tuition on weak areas.

Standard Course

Our standard course, with a run time of 12 hours, is best for those who need more guidance and/or have little to basic understanding of the subject/work.
