Course Overview
This course will provide a comprehensive, skills-based approach to academic writing to meet curriculum and assessment criteria. It is designed to equip students with the tools needed to write effectively and confidently across a variety of academic contexts. The course will begin with an introduction to the principles of academic writing, including structure, tone, and formal conventions.
We will focus on developing key skills such as constructing clear and logical arguments, writing cohesive paragraphs, and synthesizing information from multiple sources. Particular attention will be paid to research-based writing techniques, including proper citation and referencing, to ensure students meet academic integrity standards. The course will also cover the nuances of academic style, such as maintaining an objective tone, using precise vocabulary, and avoiding common errors.
Students will practice drafting, editing, and refining their work with guided exercises and model examples. Writing skills will be developed in stages, starting with planning and outlining, progressing to drafting, and culminating in producing polished, well-structured essays and reports. In addition to general academic writing, students will learn to tailor their writing to specific formats, such as argumentative essays, research papers, and reflective pieces.
By the end of this course, students will:
- Be able to plan, structure, and write clear, cohesive, and well-supported academic essays.
- Gain proficiency in constructing logical arguments and integrating evidence effectively to support their points.
- Develop an understanding of academic conventions, including tone, style, and formatting, and apply them confidently in their writing.
- Be able to research effectively, synthesize information, and correctly cite sources to avoid plagiarism.
- Demonstrate the ability to edit and refine their work, ensuring high standards of grammar, punctuation, and coherence.
This skills-based course focuses on fostering the foundational and advanced writing techniques necessary for academic success at the pre tertiary level.
