This course prepares students for the poetry component of the:
I/GCSE Literature (all exam boards)
This course is a skills-based course, teaching students how to analyze and interpret the poetry anthology.
Course Overview
This skills-based course will provide students with the tools needed to excel in literary analysis, critical commentary, and poetry-based essays. The course will follow a modular approach—covering poetic analysis techniques, followed by guided practice with various poems from the I/GCSE poetry anthology. Essay writing and analysis will be modelled in tandem, using real I/GCSE exam questions to ensure that students' essays demonstrate their analysis and meet the I/GCSE criteria.
A range of poems from the anthology will be analyzed, exploring themes, structure, and language. Students will also learn how to approach unseen poetry. This is a skills-based course designed to enhance understanding and application of poetry analysis techniques rather than focusing on a single set text.
At the end of the course the student:
- Will be able to identify, evaluate, and analyze the effect of poetic devices, structure, and techniques in a variety of poems. They will also use contextual understanding to interpret poems and explore how conventions in poetry have evolved across genres, cultures, and time periods.
- Will be able to write critical commentary on anthology and unseen poetry by ensuring their analysis is focused on the question and presented logically. They will also learn to reflect their analysis clearly by selecting relevant details, quotes, and using precise elaboration to develop cohesive essays that meet I/GCSE criteria.
- Will be able to compare poems effectively, demonstrating a strong understanding of themes, techniques, and their contextual significance, as required in comparative essay questions.
- Will gain confidence in approaching extract-based poetry essay questions by applying the skills learned to deliver thoughtful and well-structured responses.
- Will comprehend the requirements and rubrics for various assessments, enabling them to meet I/GCSE standards with clarity and precision.
