IB English B Paper 1

Course Overview

The course will focus on developing students’ ability to understand and produce written texts in a second-language context. Emphasis will be placed on comprehension, text analysis, and structured writing, equipping students with the skills necessary to effectively respond to the IB English B Paper 1 exam.

Students will engage in guided practice with a variety of authentic IB text types, including emails, articles, blogs, advertisements, brochures, formal and informal letters, reports, reviews, and speeches. They will learn how to analyze the purpose, audience, tone, and conventions of different texts, while also refining their ability to structure clear, well-developed written responses.

At the end of the course, the student:

• will be able to identify and interpret key information, stylistic features, and communicative intent in a variety of text types.
• will be able to produce well-organized, coherent, and linguistically accurate written responses that adhere to IB text type conventions.
• will be able to apply a range of grammatical structures, vocabulary, and discourse markers to enhance clarity, fluency, and precision in writing.
• will be able to comprehend and apply the IB assessment criteria for Paper 1, ensuring that their responses demonstrate appropriate language, organization, and register.

By the end of the course, the student will have developed the analytical and productive writing skills necessary to succeed in IB English B Paper 1, while also enhancing their overall linguistic proficiency.
