IB Examiner-Level Crash Course (6 or 12 Hours)

This course is delivered by an IB Examiner, offering students a calibrated, insider understanding of how textual analysis is assessed across Paper 1, the Individual Oral, and coursework.

Purpose

This course prepares students for:

  • the textual analysis components of IB Language & Literature (HL/SL)
  • Paper 1 structure, criteria alignment, and high-level analytical technique
  • the Individual Oral and coursework expectations from an examiner’s perspective

This is a skills-based analytical course. It does not teach school set texts; instead, it builds the advanced techniques needed to interpret and write about any unfamiliar text.

Course Overview

The examiner will guide the student through:

  • advanced textual and graphological analysis across a wide range of IB-level text types
  • modelling of high-scoring responses using real IB exam questions and examiner-calibrated criteria
  • structured practice applying technique, method, and criterion alignment to unfamiliar texts
  • explicit modelling of how examiners interpret evidence, elaboration, organisation, and style in Paper 1 essays

Students will learn to make their analytical thinking visible on the page, ensuring that their essays consistently meet the IB criteria.

A wide variety of IB-appropriate texts will be used:
articles, periodicals, political cartoons, op-eds, editorials, advertisements, and infographics from sources such as The New Yorker, National Geographic, international media, and government publications.

By the end of the course, the student will:

1. Demonstrate examiner-aligned analytical mastery

  • extract, evaluate, and critically analyse textual and graphological features across genres, cultures, and time periods
  • apply contextual and textual conventions accurately to interpret meaning at a high level
  • understand precisely what examiners reward in top-band responses

2. Produce analysis-driven essays that meet IB criteria

  • select relevant details and evidence with purpose
  • elaborate with precision and depth
  • structure ideas cohesively using controlled language and effective sequencing
  • ensure the analysis clearly drives the argument, as required in the highest rubric bands

3. Understand and execute all major assessment components

  • comprehend examiner expectations for the Individual Oral
  • apply rubric-aligned skills to coursework tasks
  • demonstrate improved verbal and written analytical communication
  • approach all assessments with clarity, confidence, and a calibrated understanding of how they are marked

Express Course

Our express courses are abridged versions of our standard courses.

They are best suited as revision courses for those who have a strong grasp of the subject and looking to achieve the highest grades.

They have a run time of 6 hours, and each lesson is for an hour.

Weaker students might want to use the express course as an overview and then follow that up with ad- hoc tuition on weak areas.

Standard Course

Our standard course, with a run time of 12 hours, is best for those who need more guidance and/or have little to basic understanding of the subject/work.

The course progresses at a moderate pace and all aspects of the subject/work are covered in depth.
