Persepolis 1 and 2 by Marjane Satrapi
Persepolis 1 and 2 by Marjane Satrapi
Course Overview
This course is a comprehensive study of Marjane Satrapi's graphic novels Persepolis 1 and 2. We will start the course by briefly overviewing key literary and graphological devices of a graphic novel, followed by the background of the author and its cultural significance.
Next, the student will be led through close readings and guided analysis to help them better develop their understanding of the novels- highlighting how themes, symbols, and literary devices present and further the meaning of the work. The course will also focus on the context of the work- notably its historical context and how Satrapi's use of imagery and narrative techniques help to convey her experiences growing up during the Iranian Revolution. We will also focus on middle eastern culture and how it's presented in the novels.
We will further delve into the literary analysis of the novels by identifying and interpreting figurative language, analyzing character development, and evaluating the author's purpose and message.
By the end of the course, students will have the skills and knowledge necessary to confidently discuss and write the work, while meeting curriculum criterions.
