Course Overview
This course will provide an in-depth analysis of Maus I and Maus II to meet curriculum and exam criteria. We will begin with an introduction to the historical and social context of the Holocaust, as well as the unique graphic novel format, before delving into the themes and motifs that shape the narrative. Students will engage in a guided analysis of the text, including close reading and annotations to identify literary and visual devices, as well as understand the impact of these devices individually and collectively.
The course will emphasize the interplay of form, structure, tone, and visual storytelling elements unique to the graphic novel medium. Particular attention will be paid to the use of symbolism, narrative framing, and the interplay between text and imagery. In-depth character analysis will help students explore the complexities of the characters, their relationships, and how their stories contribute to the overarching narrative. Key themes such as trauma, survival, memory, and the intergenerational effects of the Holocaust will be thoroughly examined.
Additionally, the course will focus on developing students' literary analysis and writing skills. Students will be guided in crafting detailed analyses and constructing cohesive written arguments. Emphasis will be placed on identifying key symbols, themes, motifs, and techniques throughout Maus I and Maus II to support their interpretations.
